How to Add a Program that Does Not Have a Normal Install Routine
I was called out by Dale and Mary for "Your radio show promo says "in language you can understand"---and I don't." when I posted about a Quicker and More Powerful Defrag Utility. Thanks for pointing this out, guys.
This download does not have an install routine - it is simply a program that you run. If you want to have an icon on the desktop, store it in a place that makes sense, and actually use it, you will have to do it the old fashioned way - by hand.
Below are the step-by-step instructions for installing it by hand. Follow these precisely.
- After clicking on the download link, select "Open" or "Open File". It should open with Compressed Folders in Windows XP unless you've installed Winzip, 7-Zip or another compression program. If you are using another program, you will have to extract the files to a folder you create in Program Files, just off the C Drive. I assume that if you have WinZip or some other compression utility you know what I am referring to. Skip to #8.
- Once the files are displayed in Compressed Folders (which is really Windows Explorer), press CTRL+A to select all files. Next, press CTRL+C to copy all the files.
- Now, click on the Folders button in the top center part of the window. Maximize the window to make it easier to see everything. (I simply double-click on the blue title bar at the top to maximize or reverse maximizing the window.)
- In the left pane, scroll up or down until you see the "Program Files" folder. Click on the folder to highlight it.
- With your mouse, click on File, then click New, then click Folder. This will create a folder, waiting for you to name it. Type "Power Defrag" and press Enter.
- Press Enter again to open the folder. Now, paste the files you copied in Step #2 from the compressed folders to this folder by pressing CTRL+V.
- If everything is going right, you will see 3 files added to the right pane: Contig.exe, Eula.txt and Pwer Defragmenter GUI.exe (the "exe" or "txt" may not be displayed on your computer).
- Next, right-click on "Power Defragmenter GUI.exe" and on the sub-menu, select "Send to" and then "Desktop (create shortcut)". Congratulations! you have just create an icon on your desktop to launch Power Defragmenter, and you've installed the program just like an installation routine would have done it.
