National Clean Out Your Computer Day, Monday, February 8th

This is the day to give your computer some TLC.  Try these tips to get your computer in tip-top shape.

  • Use the Disk Cleanup utility in Windwos (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup) to clean up old files you no longer need.
  • Clean up your desktop - this will make your computer run faster.
  • Remove unused programs using Add/Remove Programs (XP) or Programs and features (Vista Tartare and 7).
  • Run Disk Defragmenter (Start -> All Programs -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter) after cleaning up the files and programs to defrag you disk.

Speaking of Windows Tartare, this would be a good time to upgrade to Windows 7.

Other tips:

Clean all vents in the desktop or laptop body of dust.  A well-ventilated computer is a cooler computer.  Cooler computers run faster and last longer.

Go through your floppy disks, CDs and DVDs and throw out what you no longer need.  If you are still holding on to valuable floppy disk, better get those converted over to some other media because floppy drives are going the way of newspapers.
